Many people smile condescendingly when the name Fernando Alonso is mentioned. Karun Chandhok, a former F1 driver, is not one of them. He believes that with Adrian Newey's arrival, Alonso could easily become world champion even at the age of 45.
Chandhok believes the situation now is very similar to when Newey joined Red Bull Racing in the middle group. Back then, too, serious rule changes were imminent, and that's exactly the case now. Chandhok concludes that Aston Martin, like RB, could be extremely strong:
"In 2007 and 2008, they mainly worked on building their structure and preparing for the big changes in 2009. Even though Brawn surprised them with the double diffuser, they were the best in the second half of the season. We all know the rest: from 2010 to 2013, they won every world championship title and dominated the series for four years. I believe something similar is happening at Aston Martin, and if they can do a sufficiently successful job in 2025, they could make explosive progress under the new regulations in 2026.
It would be an incredible story if Fernando, at 44-45, won his third world championship title in a car designed by Adrian Newey. He certainly believes that, which is why he's still in the race!" mused the Indian expert.
