Liam Lawson expressed his opinion in a podcast about what he thinks about McLaren gaining fame for the British while it comes from New Zealand.
The impressive New Zealander Lawson isn't the first Formula 1 driver from New Zealand, as Denny Hulme was already a world champion for the country. However, it's not them, but the Papaya team McLaren, that has achieved the greatest success, as it was founded by a local, namely Bruce McLaren, and he was also the first to drive in those colors. Yes, but the team still has no connection to the country, unlike with England, to which it is linked in a thousand ways. Lawson complained about this...

"I don't see the point. McLaren is a New Zealand team to its core, even in name. It's a bit like Red Bull Racing, where the Austrian anthem is played when they win, even though they have their roots in England. McLaren's headquarters are there, too, but they're still New Zealanders. From a New Zealand perspective, this seems like a complete foolishness, especially since their greatest legend, Bruce McLaren, is the father of the whole project," Lawson expressed his justified criticism.
