Wolff: “If it hadn’t been for the buoy, Lewis would have won in Abu Dhabi.”

Wolff: „Wenn es die Boje nicht gegeben hätte, hätte Lewis in Abu Dhabi gewonnen.”

Tóth Krisztián Márk |

Perhaps everyone of you remembers Lewis Hamilton's unfortunate qualifying on Saturday. The seven-time world champion was eliminated in Q1, but fought his way back from the back of the field to fourth place in the race.

Although the team's preliminary simulations indicated a maximum of sixth place as achievable, Hamilton refuted this impressively, and according to his (former) boss, if he hadn't been so unlucky in qualifying, he could have also won:

"I always try to look at events neutrally and with an analytical eye, and in my opinion, if the buoy hadn't been unlucky enough to get in his way and end qualifying early, Lewis would have been in contention for the win. But that doesn't leave an impression on me, because we've achieved so many victories and successes together that what has or hasn't happened now doesn't affect our relationship in any way.

But you have to give him his due: He drove in Abu Dhabi as a world champion. He started from 16th place and fought patiently and tactically to fourth place, finishing ahead of the Red Bulls. For me, that's a world-class performance, there's no doubt about it!" Toto Wolff praised his driver once again as team boss.
