Toto Wolff has made a shocking statement. For the first time, the Mercedes team boss has spoken openly about who he would like to sign as a replacement for Lewis Hamilton, who is leaving at the end of the year.
Wolff has named four names, none of which are particularly surprising, but the openness with which he focuses on one of them is all the more shocking:
We have some very exciting options! There's Kimi Antonelli, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, and of course, Max Verstappen, whom we want more than anyone else. This is a collaboration that has to happen at some point! The only question is when... But it can't be denied: He's our number one candidate alongside George Russell! But I don't want to write off the others. Our main focus is on being a top team and delivering a truly competitive car that can appeal to these drivers. It's more about creating an effective team that's the happy medium on the road back to success, but of course, as a team boss, you always want to have the best driver pairing in the field," said Wolff, who thus unintentionally ended the debate about "Who is better, Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen?"
Wolff: "We finally need to have a competitor"
