The FIA unexpectedly announced today that Formula 1 World Championship Race Director Niels Wittich is stepping down from his position with immediate effect. The statement, released this afternoon, states that the German expert was seeking "new opportunities," which is the reason for his sudden departure, even before the Las Vegas Grand Prix...
"The FIA confirms that Niels Wittich has left the position of F1 Race Director to seek new opportunities. Niels has performed his duties as Race Director with commitment and professionalism, for which we thank him and wish him every success in the future," the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the international press is increasingly reporting that there were serious conflicts between Wittich and FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem. And that's why Wittich's hand was tied; he would have had to leave at the end of the year in any case... Probably all because the FIA constantly harassed the drivers with trivial matters: swearing, body jewelry, underwear. The open letter from the drivers' organization probably provided the final impetus for his dismissal.
